The first 31 days

I put together this slideshow with pics from the month of January.

A bit of housekeeping to share, Carla and I are getting a divorce. She recently cheated on all of us when she photographed Duran Duran and did not post those pics on 366. I'll always love her, however.

1.31.08 again with the snow

I'm soooo tired snow. I hope it stops soon because I really don't want to have to do this again. I'll get a respite from this miserable weather next week when I'm head down to Florida for a few days.

I shot this picture inside my toasty workout room/band room/Scruffins Multimedia lab/fitness center that was converted from a garage. Can you tell from the poorly insulated windows?

1.30.08 potty and then play

I had an assignment at a home daycare this morning. I chugged a pot of coffee (and I do mean an entire pot) before I left and, inevitably, had to visit the little restroom.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a.) very clean and b.) directions on how to use the potty were conveniently hung on the wall (not as handy for the female population since it's not visible while on the potty).

If you're interested in downloading this useful chart, go here after you potty.

1.28.08 a badass for Obama

I photographed Barack Obama's visit to Kansas today. After Barack and his entourage left the building, a short line formed around the podium. People (and lots of cell phone cameras) gathered around it to strike a pose where the senator had stood.

I resisted the temptation and went back to work without shooting a self-portrait on the platform. Dangit!

1.28.08 bumpy and beautiful

Molly and I flew to Independence, Kansas today in a Cessna Citation Mustang to tour the plant where they are manufactured.

It's an awesome jet. It's roomy, powerful and only $2 million. My one complaint is that it has no bathroom. Well, no private restroom. There is a leather seat that can be lifted and used as a potty IN FRONT OF EVERYONE ON THE PLANE. Thankfully, our trip was only twenty minutes and I didn't drink a thing all day so I was good not to go.

It was an incredibly windy day that made for wild hairdos and a pretty bumpy landing. We returned four hours ago I just got my land-legs back.

Leeeeexxxxiiiiii. Where aaarrrreee you?

Excuse me, have you seen Lexi Lou? She was just here and now I don't see her aaaannnnywhere.

1.26.08 a lot of looking glass

I'm in Missouri with Denise and her clan. This family likes to shop and here we are at T.J. Maxx.

It looks like Lexi is doing that thing that 8-year-old boys do where they make a farting noise in their armpit. That little girl would never be anything but ladylike.

1.25.08 a pugturesque pose

I rode with Denise, Nick, Lexi and Norton to Dennis and Mary Anne's new home in Missouri this morning. Norty is a good traveler, even with his fugly breath.

1.24.08 the things we do for charity

Carter and I attended the kickoff for the YMCA's Strong Kids campaign tonight. Our branch did a skit where we dressed in disco duds and boogied to a soundtrack that CRG created. His getup was the hit of the party.

1.23.08 it's really not potable

I opened the fridge this morning and found a beautiful blue bottle of chilled Windex. It's been a stressful week for me and I like to clean my house when my life is in disarray. I must have left it there last night.

Looks like I need to make time to go to the grocery store. My large supply of PowerBars has helped me through the past few days.

1.22.08 Joe says it's bueno

I think this is what your brain looks like on drugs. Actually, it's a torta smothered in hot sauce and it's on the menu at a local Mexican restaurant. Doesn't look very appetizing to me, but Joe Stumpe says it's delish. I was too appalled to partake.

1.21.08 a glimmering crown

I spotted this at a MLK celebration today. I wish I could successfully sport a hat like that. Although, it would be hard to shoot pictures while wearing it because light would bounce off it and onto the subject. Actually, that might be kinda cool. Hmm...

1.20.08 crawling to the alter

I've heard a lot of preachers speak about people crawling to the alter. Surely, this is not what they were talking about. She's way too cute to be a sinner.

1.19.08 frosty, but not forgotten

I am currently the proud mama of two Hondas. One is the 1996 Civic I bought in August of that year and the other is a 2004 Accord I purchased last month.

My garage isn't big enough for both automobiles, so my trusty Civic now sleeps outside (I know, I feel like a jerk). I'm giving it to my brother next month and every few days I like to drive it to let it know that it's not forgotten.

Frosty windows are something I'm not used to seeing. My windshield looked like a surreal mosaic with this morning's sunrise in the background. Scraping off the frost wasn't as pretty.

1.18.08 my man loves him some matzo

Today was an historic occasion. Carter had matzo ball soup for the first time in his life and he loved, loved, loved it.

"Beats the hell out of chicken and stars," he said. "That's for sure!"

This is the soup before he devoured it.

1.16.08 useful AND ornamental

Under the colorful Eagle umbrella is Lori B. looking very chic in her cute skirt and sleek boots.

Her ensemble is fashionable AND functional. What's her secret? I can't do both at the same time.

1.15.08 Things that make you go hmm...

I've seen a plethora of random shoes along the road in my time, but this plastic thing is a first. I spotted it in front of the Kohl's in Topeka.

Did you know that Kohl's opens at 8 a.m. for all of your early-morning shopping needs? I had no need, I was just bored. However, I quickly needed two purses and festive Valentine's Day dish towels. Of course, everything is always on sale at Kohl's.

1.14.08 State of the State

I'm in Topeka covering the start of the 2008 session. I love the checkered floor at the entrance of the House Chamber. The governor will give her State of State speech in that chamber tonight and my cameras are currently being sniffed by dogs during a security sweep.

1.13.08 Bridezilla

I covered the Prom and Bridal Expo today. Lots of anxious soon-to-be brides and sugary cake samples, but only one cake in the shape of Bridezilla.

The cake's creator told me that Bridezilla is completely edible. No Styrofoam or silicone on this bride. I love the garter belt.

1.12.08 cream cheese and a kiss

Denise and Lexi Lou at breakfast this morning. Pretty sweet stuff.

Lexi's cute coif was cut and styled just before our trip to Panera. She gets her hair done five times more often as I do. I'd probably visit the salon more if I got to watch Dora and was given a grape lollipop. Lucky girl.

1.11.08 A clean baby

I finally gave my new car its first bath today. My car isn’t exactly new (it’s a 2004 Honda Accord EX with leather seats and a sunroof - thankyouverymuch), but it’s new to me and I will try my best to keep it looking clean and newish.

I'm giving my '96 Honda Civic with 202,000 miles to my brother soon. I gave it a bath a few days ago. I take care of my babies.

1.10.08 Oy Vey is right!

My heat went out last night and I feel like a frozen husband (see below). The only warmth around me is what is radiating from my laptop and my mug.

The good news is that there is a friendly fellow from Fahnestock currently standing in front of my furnace. He has come to bring joy back into my ff-ff-ff-fffreezing cold life.

UPDATE: The problem is fixed. I'm out several dead presidents but very, very high on caffeine.

1.09.08 Sign. Sign. Everywhere a sign.

A full-scale mass casualty simulation and structural collapse was held on this site back in October. For some reason, the corpses were never recovered. The poor things were just left to die.

This sign recently appeared. Hmm.

1.08.08 The gateway to shopping paradise

Am I wrong? I don't think so.

While I was taking this picture a woman walked by chatting on her phone. She said, "I'm at Target and I don't even know why?"

That's happened to me many times. It's a shopping oasis. A comfortable place for weary consumers. Ahhhh.

1.07.08 tinsel tree

I packed away all but one of my holiday decorations on Jan. 1. I'm having a hard time parting with my silver tinsel tree. I love the way the light glows in my home at night and waking up to a warm, well-lit kitchen.

So, I might keep my tree out for a little while longer. Is that just too tacky?

1.06.08 Finding joy on Sunday morning

I finally got a chance to experience what my Belle Plaine friends refer to as "joy." Their definition of joy is a combination of Mama G's pancakes, mimosas, friends and Nigella Lawson on the boob tube (the boys salivate over this buxom British cook).

Sister Stella Dora Mary Carrie St. James Lexicon White Dog finds her joy on Sundays in the form of three pancakes at the end of the meal. She waits very patiently for Mamma G to finish her breakfast before she is tossed her weekly treat.

I'm cheating by posting more than one pic today. I shot some details around Mama G's home, including the lovely sausage grease (better left on the plate than in our arteries).

I loved discovering "joy" this morning and I'm loving my Canon G9.

1.05.08 He thinks I'm high-larious

Joanna's son Cooper celebrated his third birthday today with his buddies, their mommies (and one daddy) and me. I'm so thrilled that he forgave me for accidentally pinching his little chin while putting on his bike helmet. Poor thing. It happened a year ago and I still feel awful about it.

Anyway, the guy thinks I'm funny, especially when I balance things on top of my head. (I'm a big hit with the preschool crowd.)

1.04.08 self portrait fun

Lens flare on my imac camera? Come ON!

01.03.08 There's no 'I' in Boston

Super chilly day in Boston with Mike shooting our Boston Urban Alphabets. This is my 'i.'

1.04.08 Undercover Cat

My cat, Blixie, emerges from a warm nest she created under my bedspread. It's another cold day, which makes it the perfect time to snuggle in bed. She's a smart one.

Carla, I miss you. C'mon!

1.03.08 Canteen

This is the canteen at The Wichita Eagle. I've never heard anyone refer to this room as such, but that's what it is written on the swinging door out front. Gotta love the giant napkin dispensers.

1.01.08 A Chilly Flight

A bald eagle soars over the Little Arkansas River in Wichita, Kan. on a very, very, chilly day. I took this snap around noon and was thankful that the sun was reflecting off the snow and onto his face. My bird-watching friends tell me that this dude is probably a dude (they can tell by his body size - females birds are much larger than their male counterparts).

1.01.08 Chillin' in VT

This was taken on our way back from a snowy New Year's celebration near Wilmington VT. It just kept snowing, and snowing, and well, snowing!

1.01.08 Piping In The New Year

Greg Ewing plays "Auld Lang Syne" on the bagpipes to ring in 2008 in Wellington, Kansas. Cheering him on is his friend (and bagpipe supporter) Carter Green.
