Happy New Year!

366 in 2009 from Jaime Oppenheimer on Vimeo.

Don't know how this happened but I actually have 366 images even though 2009 had 365 days. Go figure.

"One Night In Bangkok" was recorded in 2009 by the incredible Carter Green at his recording studio, Greenjeans Studios. It's one of my favorite songs he did this year using the fancy pants bass guitar I gave him for his birthday.

Enjoy the pics and come on back in 2010 for more!

12.31.09 Happy New Year!

I fell far behind during the holidays and didn't send this card out like I had hoped. I hope 2010 is a wonderful year everyone. Much love, JAG.

12.30.09 Oy

The snow that fell Tuesday night was pretty but it didn't stick around very long. Most of it melted away by the afternoon.

12.28.09 ball

Basketball is best played indoors in the winter.

12.27.09 a Smurfy couple

My friend Sara lives in Massachusetts and will check in on this blog periodically. She has noticed an increase in Smurf-talk lately and she sent us this Smurf bride and groom as a wedding gift. We love it and it's on display on the tchotchke shelf above our kitchen sink.

She has also noticed that we visit a certain watering hole a lot and she and her husband sent us a very generous gift certificate to Oeno to "keep date night alive." We're glad to do so. Thanks!

12.26.09 a furry houseguest

He looks so sleepy because he woke up at 3 a.m. and again at 6 a.m. with his puggish whimpering. About four years ago I made the mistake ONCE of feeding him in the middle of the night when he cried and he has never forgotten that. Now I just tell him to go back to bed and he will (for a few more hours at least).

12.25.09 This boy is PSYCHED!

G.I. Joe will do that for a 7-year-old. He was also pretty excited about a shotgun that he got earlier in the day from his Aunt Stephanie.

12.24.09 the height chart

Grandma marks Kendall's height on the wall after remarking how much he had grown over the past year. His brother's height was updated and mine marked for the first time. It's a good thing grandma made a bunch of pies for those growing boys.

12.23.09 a cattail Christmas

Fran let her grandchildren decorate her tree and they used every ornament she owns. I love the topper.

12.21.09 dragging Douglas

Robin's aunt recently gave her the "Cat Car," a 9-year-old gold Jaguar. Robin likes her new fly ride but says that I'm still her favorite JAG.

12.20.09 more sugar than a Mt. Dew

About nine years ago I worked on a story with Joe Stumpe about an insanely talented sweet old lady who made 75 different types of candy from scratch. Five years ago I moved into the house across the street and I've been the lucky beneficiary of her Christmas candy craftsmanship ever since.

12.19.09 the Master

Carter was elected Master of Wellington Lodge #150, taking over for his pop who served as Master last year.

The induction ceremony was open to the public. He gave a great speech, but Nick said he was a little disappointed that he didn't hit on health care and the economy.

12.18.09 Feta Gouda (very good)

Finally got to see my friend Alan's band called Monterey Jack play. Check out his awesome rock stance. The band named themselves after cheese because they didn't want to take themselves too seriously. They refer to themselves as a cheesy cover band, but there's nothing cheesy about them. They MELTED my cheesy face off!

12.17.09 MORE BUTTER!!!

Peggy has been hard at work making treats to share once again this year. She has gone through EIGHT pounds of butter. I don't doubt that she used this mighty mixer while making the coconut bars at left and the tray of "Decadent Delights" on the right.

12.15.09 Christmas

in Kingman, Kansas

12.14.09 DDT

Molly opens up her "First Book of Flying," a hostess gift from Carrie (thanks for making us look like losers, Carrie). It's a 1940s tale of adventure, aviation and there's a sweet passage about pilots spraying DDT on crops.

12.09.09 a holiday reading

Carrie reads a few passages from the book she scored at the annual book exchange held each Christmas at book club. Not sure why Robin is covering her ears and Katie and Bonnie are gasping.

12.06.09 birthday breakfast at the Beacon

Gigantic cinnamon roll WITH a candle AND the entire restaurant sang to me!

12.05.09 I love LOG!!!

Had an awesome birthday party with Denise's famous homemade pizza, hats and, wait for it, LOG!!!!!!!! For those of you who don't speak log, it's a Dairy Queen ice cream cake in the shape of a log and it's unbelievably awesome! It's my favorite kind of cake.

12.04.09 Chuck E. Cheese

Where a kid can be a kid! Oh, and I totally kicked arse on the basketball game. Yep, that's right! Came within two points of beating the all-time high. I will return.

12.03.09 poor Stan

My friend Stan's house was burglarized while he was at a funeral in Arkansas. His flatscreen television set was stolen and he really wishes they had taken his dirty clothes. He has made a sign and put it in his front yard telling his neighbors about the ordeal. My favorite part is where he encourages people to call the police if they see anything "extraordinary or strange. Not me."

12.02.09 waiting for Avenue Q

It's a little dizzying. It's also the first photo I've posted that was captured with my new cell phone camera. Not too shabby (when viewed at this small size) considering the very dim lighting.

12.01.09 state football

One of my favorite assignments of the year because I get to spend the day with J & J (Joanna and Jonathan) and we got to eat chicken fried steak and PIE! That's Ann Williams shooting a pic.

Joanna wowed the crowd once again. Seriously, this woman is good in front of a crowd. Even the famous grandfather of one of the players thought she was great and told her so.

11.30.09 he is a tad creepy

Wu Shock has been named the eighth creepiest mascot in the country. At least, he's not this thing.

11.29.09 a very dapper dude

Randy shows off his bow tie at the transformed Garage MaHall. It's a garage by day and a fancy dining establishment by night (well, one evening a year).

11.28.09 my Black Friday find

After I finished covering Black Friday I couldn't go back to sleep. So, at 5 p.m. I headed out to Target to see what I could find. I spent a whopping six dollars - $1.50 on the Diet A&W Root Beer that I drank while shopping (Denise hates it when I do that), $2.50 on rubber kitchen gloves to keep my fabulous nails looking fantastic, and $2 on two sets of Smurfs pins I found in the Dollar Bin.

For me, finding these pins was kind of like finding a LCD television set marked half-price for most American consumers. I'm a lifelong lover of those little blue guys (and one lucky gal) and I've never seen Smurf apparel until now. I totally Smurfed a FIND!

11.27.08 Black Friday

My day began at 2 a.m. covering the annual shopping tradition. It wasn't all bad. I got to hear "The Final Countdown" and that's one of my favorites.

11.26.09 Tryptophan and testosterone

Carter's sisters gets picked up by her two youngest sons. She has four boys who are all much bigger than her. She and her husband hosted Thanksgiving and I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that there were two pies for every guest. Seriously. It was out of control.

11.25.09 mounted dog

It looks like a stuffed and mounted dog, but it's actually a curious dog trying to get through the cat door.

11.24.09 SURPRISE!

Lexi and I "surprised" Denise with a chocolate birthday cake we made together. I say "surprised" because, well, it's hard to make plans with a 4-year-old without telling the 4-year-old's mommy.

I had a hard time picking between the above photo and this one. They're both pretty sweet images of two of my favorite girls.

Some other lovely ladies took Denise out for lunch today. Poor Suzanne, nobody wanted to sit next to her.

11.22.09 it's hard being 2

Poor Gavin. We were able to get some good pics of him, though. Those Chadwick boys are freaking adorable, even when they're bawling!

11.21.09 Pizza, Popcorn and Pee Wee

We showed the kids "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" and that movie is just as awesome in 2009 as it was in 1985. Seriously.

I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I? I know you are but what am I?

11.20.09 Denise decoration

Carter was inspired by the artwork of his talented children to make these stick figurines. We'll use them as party decorations to celebrate Denise's birthday. Of course I came up with the photos and the very clever idea to glue coins to the bottom (sorry, U.S. Mint). My favorite is the tall one on the far left. She's running while listening to her iPod.

11.18.09 my hair model

Testing out the lights before I shot a woman for a story on hair. This is a good pose for Brian, but not nearly as good as the last time he modeled for me.

11.17.09 my vegetable identification skills are lacking

Thankfully, the folks around me knew that these were turnips. I was pretty clueless.

11.16.09 homecoming

Photographed a reunion of National guardsmen and their family. The airmen had been in Saudi Arabia since April. It was a fun thing to watch.

11.15.09 a powwow first

The powwow started ON TIME! I've covered many a powwow during my time as a photojournalist and they usually start about 45 minutes after the stated time. In fact, the organizers have joked with me that they run on "Indian Time," a time zone far, far away from CST.

11.14.09 It's Mudbug Marrying Season

The beautiful triangle player extraordinaire Erin got hitched on Saturday. They had an intimate ceremony and a rocking reception.
