01.30.11 quality, not quantity

Robin doesn't cook many different foods but she does really well at the ones she does make, like this chicken tortilla soup. Jennifer and I recently made up a list of foods Robin makes and we came up with nine culinary masterpieces (J. Pett included oatmeal which doesn't really count, but I'll give it to her).

Sorry that this blog is starting to look like a food, wine and beer blog. It's just that I'm around a lot of really attractive food.

01.29.11 sesquicentennial suds

I celebrated the state's birthday by sipping a wheat beer on a beautiful day. It wasn't made in Kansas, but KCMo is close enough.

01.28.11 I know how she feels

Love this sign at the Belle Plaine Service Area on the Kansas Turnpike. I get it! The sign for the men is a similar design and very funny. I would've taken a picture of it but I was busy in the women's bathroom trying to look less like the woman on the sign.

01.25.11 pot pie

I can't be stopped, people.

01.24.10 yet another use for newspaper

Wrapping up Coho salmon caught in Alaska in 2009. The fisherman needed to make room in his freezer for an elk. I have a hard time finding room in my freezer for popsicles.

01.21.11 a RAD decade

We had a few friends over to celebrate the music, food and costume of the '80s. We plan to do it again and the next time I hope this guy calms down his do since it was hard to see Galaga while sitting behind him.

Oh, and Denise's Buckle nametag is the real deal because she is that cool!

01.20.11 Pickin' Chicken Day

The St. Paul's United Methodist Church is preparing for its 65th annual chicken and noodles feast. They use 554 pounds o' turkey and 360 pounds of chicken.

01.19.11 mmmeatloaf

Two friends gave me their meatloaf recipe last yesterday so I saw it as a sign that I should get on it. I took their ideas and made my own with dried and fried onions, bbq sauce and lots of cumin.

01.13.11 pot pie Purrrrrrsday

Made my first pot pie on Tuesday in anticipation of Thursday's date night. It was nomriffic. I used the great Justin Wilson's technique cooking and patience. "You cook this gumbo today, but you don't serve it today - noooo. You put it in your ice box and serve it tomorrow."

01.11.11 Happy Anniversary

Molly's husband of more than 24 years sent her 24 beautiful roses. They are almost as purdy as her, but not quite.

01.10.11 the oath

The inauguration of Kansas Governor Sam Brownback was moved indoors because of snow and cold air. I was a little bummed about that since the ceremony on the snowy capitol steps would make for some nice Norman Rockwell-esque photos. AND I smartly dressed for the cold air. I looked like a fool in my layers of fleece and Cuddleduds in the crowded House Chamber, but at least I got in. These people had to watch the ceremony on television.

01.06.10 Night at the Arb

One of the 200 photos I took (well, I set my camera to shoot) overnight at the Bartlett Arboretum. I'm pretty sure that's a shooting star during a 20-second exposure. The battery conked out on me a few hours into the project but I was happy with the short video I put together. I plan to use some of it in a short documentary I'm making about the place.

01.05.11 Pig Shack

Maybe it should be called the deer shack, although I don't think they serve venison.

01.02.11 Post-Christmas clearance

I can't believe this gem only cost me one dollar. Does buying it for myself make me less of a rock star? Probably, but I don't care.
